WalkAmerica is coming

I have the distinction of being a failure at getting most everyone in my office to join me for WalkAmerica, which is coming up on April 30th, 2005.

Last year, I was able to muster about 15 people (out of over 150), who collectively raised about $1450. I started bugging people early this year, hoping to double our fund-raising, and so far only two people (counting me) have signed up.

Pretty lame.

Anyway, even though I can’t get my team rolling, I figured I’d throw out a reminder to all of you that this excellent fundraiser is coming up. WalkAmerica helps raise funds for research and prevention of premature birth and birth defects. The Walk is very fun, with live music, plenty of fun snack stops on the way, and a nice course (Rose Garden – Esplanade – Hawthorne Bridge – Waterfront Park – Broadway Bridge – Rose Garden).

I encourage you to go to the WalkAmerica site today, where you can learn more about what it’s about, register online, and even use the website for fundraising (no more taking those awkward forms around to your friends and family).

Catch ya later.

Usually the overhead for fundraising events like this is about 50% — so half of your money goes to the cause, and half to the events management company that puts it on. Companies will try to spin this, but it’s hard to put on an event like this for less than 30% of revenue, and even then, one-third goes to private event companies.

If you want to help out, give money directly to the cause. If want to have a nice walk, go for it.
