Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon

It looks like there’s a new pope. I’m not Catholic so I don’t feel I should comment about the new pope. Then again, he is a head of state.

The Archdiocese of Portland is involved in various legal activities relating to sexual contact between minors and some priests. April 29, 2005 is the last day for filing claims against the archdiocese. You can find more information here, along with info about the bankruptcy.

Now that I’ve got the messy business out of the way, the real purpose of this post is to write about the architecture of various Catholic churches in the tri-county area.

I’ve lived in Spain and I’ve lived in Costa Rica and in Spain I was able to check out some churches that were hundreds of years old. Costa Rica also had an amazing amount of churches that went back over a hundred years.

Here in Portland there are numerous churches that people should check out just to see some of the amazing ways these churches were built. The Oregon churches are obviously not going to be as ornate and majestic as the churches in Europe but, nevertheless, the churches in Oregon are interesting.

Church architecture can be as doctrinaire as many of the church’s teachings and there are certain rules to be followed when building a Catholic church. More information about Catholic church architecture can be found here.

For those interested in Catholic church architecture in the tri-county you can check out the website of the Archdiocese of Portland which will lead you to contacts in the archdocese who have information about the various churches.

For those interested in possibly pursuing a career in architecture, it seems the only university in Oregon that teaches architecture is the University of Oregon School of Architecture.
