Mailing it in…AKA Portland’s Best/Worst Sushi
Just stopping by during a long day which just keeps on going.
And, in keeping with my niche, I ask you to tell me about your votes for Portland’s best/worst sushi.
My votes for best:
Yoko’s on SE Gladstone — went there on my birthday. By far my best experience yet.
Koji’s — solid fare.
The place near 181st and Glisan — sorry, completely drawing a blank, but their sushi is excellent.
Also rans:
Kappaya — SE Division’s low-brow sushi joint. Really liked it my first time, but have been disappointed since.
Todai — the only thing this place has going for it is the bottomless nature of the meals. And free birthdays. The sushi is about as good as Fred Meyer’s (alright, that might be a bit harsh, but it is pretty lackluster) but if you’re starving for sushi and have a long lunch, it’s a great place to go.
Sushiville — Good for mass consumption. Kinda like Todai, but usually cheaper.
Bush Gardens — Where I gave away my sushi virginity (18th birthday). The second time I went was one time too many…
Worst:
Haven’t experienced an awful sushi adventure yet. Maybe you have. Your input is welcome.

My daughter’s favorite sushi place (yeah, yeah, yeah - the six year old likes sushi) is Marineopolis Sushiland - the place with the conveyor belt.
I like it ’cause she’s got expensive tastes, and therefore I don’t have to pay a small mint to feed her sushi.
You’ve never seen anything like this one in action - she scans the conveyor belt, shouting out ‘come to mommmaaaa’ when she sees stuff she knows she likes…
Takahashi is the name you’re looking for, Pieman.
Yoko’s is heaven. Three reasons:
1.) Only female sushi chef in Portland.
2.) Bathroom decor is, uh, powerful.
3.) Good, good sushi.
I second the Takahashi suggestion, but from what I understand the one on hundred-and-something and Holgate is where it’s at, not the one downtown. I’ve eaten at the Holgate one and been pleased every single time.
I also like Sushi Cafe K on NE Broadway at about 20th (across from the clogs shop, next to Jiffy Lube).
You can find out what others have to say at a site I discovered while looking up the address for Sushi Cafe-Sushifinder!

There you go!
And Betsy, I would LOVE to go to sushi with your daughter. It sounds awesome. :)
Sushiville on NW 23rd in Portland has the craziest servers anyone could hope to meet with. They sell 2 products 1.fish 2.conversation they do both very well!
Sushiland had a chef cut their hand and continued to work. He did put on a (clear) plastic glove for sanitation, but still…I could see the blood while I was eating. makes me wonder what else goes on that I don’t see!!!
