One for the ladies
AKA Best/Worst place to buy skin creams and crap…
Yesterday my wife and I were at the mall downtown (having just seen A Lot Like Love, the latest Ashton Kutcher flick, which was entirely watchable entirely due to the loveliness of Amanda Peet) and she decided to duck into The Body Shop to look at skin creams, with an eye towards finding what she’d like to rub on her belly every day as she gradually becomes more obviously pregnant. And I thought “this is a nice place.”
I’m qualified to have an opinion, by virtue of my shady past. While in college, I worked at a Bath and Body Works over Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break because a friend of mine was a manager and offered me more than Gap had been paying me to come hang out with her professionally. They started me off in the stock room, but decided I was good with customers, and put me on cashier duty for the remainder of my stay (I’d walk the floor occasionally, but as I wasn’t gay and didn’t feel like faking it, ladies didn’t really buy me as someone they could trust to help them pick out a bath cream).
I haven’t been to a great many places in Portland where you can buy this stuff, so please add your insights.
Best: Maybe I’m a bit biased, but I really do like Bath and Body Works. Despite the fact that the odors of the place sent me home with a daily headache, I appreciate the fact that, despite being a thoroughly chick-ish place to go, they have a worthwhile section that men can peruse while biting their tongue wishing their mate would just hurry the hell up.
The rest of my experience is limited to a couple quick walk-throughs of The Body Shop, which, as I said, looks nice (but is lacking in enough manly materials to merit an independent visit) and Fred Meyer’s, where I bought my wife some foot soak and a loufa a year ago for a stocking stuffer at Christmas time.
So, please, fill in the blanks on this post…

Ha! You caught me. Big secret, though. Shhhh.
Do they have Lush there yet? That’s even better than Body Shop and BBW, IMHO.
Do we have Lush here yet? Good question…but there’s a cool little place in Pioneer Place called D’lish, though, that gives me the Lush vibe.
Locally owned (always a plus in my book), and full of cool bath stuff (bath bombs and the like…)
I haven’t been to Kiehl’s up on 23rd yet, but I have NY friends who rave about Kiehl’s…
My sister-in-law used to work at Kiehl’s up on NW 23rd, so we always got Kiehl’s products as gifts. They have some really nice stuff. We got hooked on their tea tree shampoo and some of their great lotions. It’s more expensive than Body Shop or Fred Meyer, but I can see why people would pay more.
D’Lish is an obvious rip-off of LUSH. We do have a LUSH, on NW 23rd and Johnson. Spendy products but they’re also wonderful.
I vouch for you man, The mens section of “bath and body works” is “ok”. I actually buy their shave creme if I find myself near there, its alot better then gillete or somethin like that from the grocery store.
What about Escentials on 23rd and on Hawthorne! They have great stuff and it can all be custom scented!
