Best local viewpoints

By “local”, I mean within 30 (or so) minutes of downtown Portland.

Your suggestions are, naturally, quite welcome.

CROWN POINT
Head east on Stark through Corbett, or follow the signs on I-84 East.

Crown Point, a lovely old building, is, in itself, lovely to look at. But the view is tremendous as well.

COUNCIL CREST/ROCKY BUTTE/MT TABOR
Portland’s local hills and (now-defunct) volcano offer a variety of views of the city and it’s surroundings, all without burning much gas. Great for biking or hiking locally, and all have nearby bus service.

PORTLAND AIRPORT
When I was a kid, we used to go here in the afternoon (we being me and my grandparents), get hot dogs from the guy who ran a stand there, and watch planes take off and land. Some people still do that, but I like to drive past the airport at night and look at the pretty blue lights.

EASTSIDE ESPLANADE
Look at my recent Out and About column for some great shots from this nice walk.

Your ideas?

    Did you do that panorama?

    Glad you asked!

Actually, no I didn’t. I pulled that off of the State’s website discussing Crown Point. I didn’t know if I’d be able to get it to post, and was thrilled that it worked.

My favorite views of Portland in Portland:

    Mt. Tabor looking towards downtown.

    Rocky Butte looking all directions.

University of Portland looking over Swan Island towards downtown.

My favorite view of Portland outside of Portland:

Northwest corner of Mt. Scott on Cityview Lane.

From the Japanese Garden and also from Pittock Mansion are quite nice. The latter is free.

If you go to the airport, you can actually get a fantastic view and photos of Mt. Hood from the top of the short term parking. I’ve actually seen photographers up there with tripods at dusk and dawn.

My favorite view of the gorge is actually from the Washington side at Cape Horn on SR-14.
