The Edge – love it, hate it, or indifferent?
I’m a big headline skimmer – but I have to admit that I can’t even scan The Edge. On the other hand, many friends of mine consider it one of the few reasons to read the Living section, and it’s an entry point into regular newspaper reading for my 12-year-old son (who insists on reading select snippets aloud to me.)
I don’t know if it’s the layout or the content. I don’t think it’s the subject matter – I like offbeat and/or wacky factoids as much as the next person. And I have to admit that I’ve cracked a grin or two on the rare occasions that I actually read it.. (I DO TOO have a sense of humor, so you know…)
So – why am I skipping The Edge over every day?

I loved the Edge when I was growing up, and there have even been times that I’ve read it online from Philly. But with so much other stuff to read out there, it becomes something to jettison from your day.
It has no place in a NEWSpaper.
The Oregonian gets dumber and dumber with each passing year.
I suggested to the O’s Peter Bhatia last week that “The Edge” had to go…..very puerile….ripped directly from the web….readily available there 24/7.
he responded that it is his 15yo son’s favorite.
i rest my case: puerile. Drivel. Readily available on the web. Waste of trees in the O. gots to go!
Hmmm…maybe this is part of their campaign to build future readers. That’s one 15 year old and one 12 year old thus far – until they further discover the web, that is…
Just because Peter Bhatia’s son reads The Edge, doesn’t make it a great item in the O. Puerile is a good description of the column.
I wonder if Bhatia Jr reads any other sections of the paper.
