Extreme Makover: Tri-Met edition?
There is a good possibility it is just me, but here goes!
Have you noticed on Tri-Met that we now have drivers more on the “Jungle Cruise” operator end of the scale lately? In addition to calling out not just the bus number but some of the stops too. And then there’s the ‘extra’ interaction too. Here are just a few of the things I’ve heard in the last couple of weeks:
-Please make sure if you leave your gloves you leave me both of them, I have enough mismatched sets. And thank you for your kindness but I have more than enough umbrellas so please take them with you.
-Will the 15 make it around the corner? Stay tuned for the next episode of ‘As The Bus Turns’.
-(Wrestling announcer ‘lets get ready to rumbllllle voice) Thirrrrty ninth avenue!!! Trrrrrrrrransfer to the 75! (regular voice) Or not, it’s just an option.
-Be sure to tell all your friends about Tri-Met’s outstanding same day service.
What happened to the bus? I definitely don’t miss the gruff and grim, but I’m wondering if it isn’t part of a PR makeover so that people complain less about the impending fare hike

while i don’t ride the buses much, i do ride MAX on a daily basis. there is a MAX driver who works mornings, usually mid mornings and when we cross over the steel bridge, he welcomes us to the beautiful city of Portland and gives us the weather report for the day. i’ve heard it numerous times, so I know it’s not a freak occurance.
That’s interesting Miss Fishbones… almost enough to make me curious to ride the bus. Almost.
I’ve been riding the 15 lately, so I know what you’re talking about! At least one of the drivers on the afternoon route heading out of town after 5 pm keeps up this running monologue of commentary the whole time.
I don’t think it’s a corporate dictate, though. I think he does it to keep himself amused…
I’ll have to keep an eye out for you, Betsy!
I noticed it because if I’m slackin or the weather is bad I ride the 15 in and then take another bus the rest of the way to the building where I work instead of walking it, and since I take two different ones I noticed it on both and at different times too, and it seemed kind of all of a sudden so I wondered if it was all of a sudden for a reason.
It is corny, but I kinda like it - so Portland. I’ve noticed the tourists eat it up.
