DSL? the “O”?

so, i’m reading the online version of the O this morning and come accross an article named “DSL PRICES.” I thought, hey, let’s go check it out and see what they have to say. Hoping for maybe a discussion about different plans and speeds and costs, all it was was a roundabout statement telling me that the dsl providers are lowering their prices to compete against cables eventhough in the long run, it costs more for DSL. i truly don’t understand the purpose fo this article.
we’re on cable for a few reasons. first of all, when we moved to cable about 5 years ago, the speeds were blistering compared to dsl. the uptime was also amazing compared to dsl. overall, it was just a good experience. the other thing about cable is you don’t have this issue shopping for the best provider and the best ISP. most telecoms offer you both services in one package, but when you see these offers for $15 a month for internet, remember, that’s just for the services, not the ISP. Comcast does both, albeit for $45 a month, but hey, I’m not forced to have a home phone line either.
that’s the other reason we switched to cable. i hated paying upwards of $35 a month for a phone which we rarely used. with both of us having cell phones and work phones and work cell phones, what’s the purpose of having yet another phone at home that just goes to voicemail. that’s just my thought. we do have a home phone, with our original home number, but we’re using Vonage that runs on the broadband service from comcast. Vonage is only $15 a month for unlimited calls anywhere in the USA. so, in the end, we have high speed internet, phone, basic cable (if we want it) - all for about $60 a month. if we chose DSL and the traditional method, that would probably be upwards for $75 a month, along with long distance charges that we would incur for calling vancouver or salem.

just a morning thought.

You know, you can get the same services from a DSL provider, and there are LOCAL companies (read, your dollars stay in portland!) that provide DSL service without requireing phone service.

DSL is far superior if you can find a decent ISP because the bandwidth is dedicated, not shared with the rest of your neighbors, and as for uptime, I’ve had enough experience with comcast and a few other cable internet companies to know that updtime is NOT their forte.

I suggest you check out Stephouse Networks, they’re local, they provide DSL without a phone line, and they have speeds faster than you can get with Comcast, all for reasonable prices.
