Time For A Road Trip

This is the time of the year where I wish the rains would come. That east wind blows so cold. I miss the cover of an overcast sky.

I think it’s time for a road trip. Just got balked by Hannah, my 12-year-old daughter, who said “Cannon Beach, that’s like two hours. There is no way I am spending two hours in the truck.” Funny, I’m back out on the road after nearly thee years without a car. I still don’t own one but I sure am driving Judy’s Ford Ranger all over town. The kids couldn’t be happier but now they want comfort, not some little jump seat tossing them around.

But Judy works this weekend. She’s a nurse on the night shift, working 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a 16 hour shift on Friday. She’s off through Thanksgiving but when the shifts kick in, she needs that sleep and we need to get out of the house.

So, on Saturtday, we are going on a road trip. Any suggestions? What are you doing?

Here are some thoughts:

* Coast — Seaside, Gearhart or Astoria? Seaside for chowder? Where?
* Hood River — Any one know a good apple orchard?
* Willamette Valley– Just have a hankering to get back down toward Corvallis.
* Steelhead fishing on the Sandy — I want to get the line in the water.

i like the idea of the willamette valley. check out the Oregon Gardens maybe. another suggestion is Astoria. i always loved Astoria. if you choose hood river, take the scenic route and check out the waterfalls. also, there is a walking trail that will take you along the original gorge highway through hand blown tunnels and such.
    have fun

we’re doing sausage making on saturday. more on that later.

My 12 year old son insists that *no one* makes chowder like Mo’s makes chowder.

We’ve always liked Newport, although it’s a bit long for a day trip. The aquarium, the chocolate factory nearby (Pegasus or Paradise Chocolates, I believe), and - of course - a stop at Mo’s. Just don’t get sucked into the Ripleys and Wax Museum and the like…
