What is it…

…with Fred Meyer and socks, anyway?

I had to run to Freddy’s this morning to grab something I was out of at home – and noticed the tables and tables of socks set out, ready and waiting for tomorrow.

“Oh, yeah,” I thought to myself. “I remember former co-workers raving about it – that they’d line up at o-dark-thirty on Black Friday to buy socks.”

Now, my kids definitely need socks. And I’m definitely into saving money. But just the thought of doing any kind of retail shopping on Black Friday scares the crap out of me. Even if it means I save a few dollars.

Can someone tell me what the attraction is? And – why socks?

Even Theo’s reporters from the City Hall beat are talking about this.

“I’m told that as a new Oregonian, I need to stop by Fred Meyer early for socks, but I’m not sure I can drag myself out of bed that early for hosiery.”

Work there, done that. Socks come in on four to six pallets stacked 6-7 feet tall in late October and get massed out onto tables the day before Thanksgiving.

The sock sale is kind of like an easter egg hunt in Nov. I see socks plucked from the mass two days before the sale and hidden all over the store; behind furnace filters, picture frames, shampoo etc. The strategy is to get into the store rather late into the sale and leisurely strole to the secret hiding spot and pull out the hidden treasures. Only problem with this strategy is that I am in the hunt as well and if I find your “stash” it goes back into the sock mass. Also, sneaking product into out-of-the-way places around the store invites shoplifting suspicion upon customers -it just looks wrong.

That said, just pay the normal price during a normal sale and get what you want plus a little, i.e. more time. After all, time is money. How much is two hours of sleep time worth to you the day after Thanksgiving? I’d say it worth more than a couple dollars off socks.
