Bicyclists nabbed for stop sign running too

found this in the O from last week. i know there’s been discussion here about “rogue” cyclists and i think the city and the cyclists are doing something about it.

$237 for running a stop sign. ouch.

You’re beautiful, baby…!

Last week, my daughter and I stopped by It’s a Beautiful Pizza for the first time ever to grab a quick slice before an appointment in less than an hour. The counter guy struck up a conversation with my daughter that had her giggling, and pointed out the television with the cartoons currently running. She gobbled down her pizza (with pauses to fastidiously pick out the mushrooms hiding under the blanket of black olives), was stunned and amazed by the black light, and pronounced it her ‘new favorite pizza place!’

The next morning, I realized my prescription sunglasses were no longer in my coat pocket – and since the previous evening’s after-dark travels had taken us through one after care place, one pizza place, two bus trips (with a running dash between buses), one school conference, one car trip and an after-conference visit to the gelato shop, well – I figured I was SOL. But – hey, they’re prescription glasses, in a pretty spendy frame, no less – so I figured I’d try to retrace my steps where possible.

I dropped by It’s a Beautiful Pizza tonight in the freezing cold rain to ask about my glasses. A second very nice gentleman went in search of my specs. And lo and behold – I got lucky, lucky, lucky (on a Monday, no less.)

I now have my sunglasses back. (I’ll pack them carefully away until next spring now.) And I, too, have a ‘new favorite pizza place!”

Another side of Portland

found the following while surfing blogs related to Oregon – CityNoise.org – Portland OR. i enjoy finding other portlander’s writings on items i too see and observe daily. on my walks, i see grafitti all over Portland. when it gets too close to home, i usually photog it and send it to the city. yes taggers, i turn you in. flame me. there is some grafitti and there are some locations where i think it’s pretty cool. old abandoned warehouses in industrial areas are what i’m thinking about. i know, i know, it’s vandalism. i don’t know how to justify it, but some of the stuff is cool and i view it as art.

check out citynoise.org and see what our fellow portlanders see from their perspective.

Snow in Portland

yep, people it’s snowing in portland and the news channels already have their graffics up.

STORM WATCH 2005

i just laugh at the chuckleheads sometimes. i wonder if the snow will stump KGW’s riveting coverage of what Portland would due if we were attacked by a nuke. yes, that’s KGW, not FOX.

Ouch!

If anyone’s curious as to how I spent my weekend, Saturday was a series of planes into Portland.

Sunday, however, I went skiing on all that fresh new snow, and then I fell and almost snapped my neck. Being the inveterate photographer, I asked a friend to take a picture of me just so that I could show everyone.
NOT FOR THE WEAK OF STOMACH.
Benkay, bloodied.

Also, Vicodin! Woo!

On the SAW

On the SAW

Went to Holoscene tonight to catch a band named Evelyn Westin and her Saw. Evelyn actually plays a saw with a bow. amazing how she can keep tune with her mother on the violin. They played a couple of tunes together and then were joined by a bass, drums, and an accordian. A great group of musicians.

Sent from my phone, probably while hiding from the man.

What to Do On A Sunday Night?

What do you do on a Sunday night? I thought I might go to the Guild tonight to see a Northwest Film Center film. But after reading the preview for Saraband, I opted out pretty quickly. An Ingmar Bergman film on a Sunday night is just a bit much for me tonight.

I often have Sunday nights free. Judy works the night shift as a nurse and the kids are usually back at their mother’s house. And, often, I just get too restless and need to head out, if nothing else but to go for a walk. I expect that a walk is in order tonight.

I guess for some follks it is a matter of ritual and tradition. I know one family that gathers for Sunday supper every week. That sounds great. A real event to look forward to for the commence of the week.

What do you like to do on a Sunday evening? Stay in and read a book or head out on the town? If you head out, what do you like to do? Does your family have a Sunday night tradition?

Slip-sliding in the snow…

I read this more than 24 hours ago in yesterday’s O, and it still has me chuckling…

Across the street at Pioneer Place, the biggest buzz was over “snow” wafting from blowers on the mall’s uppermost floors onto the heads of thrilled children below. Unfortunately, the stunt backfired a bit as the “snow,” made of soap, became slippery as it settled to the floor.

Kids fell. Janitors mopped. The mall’s maintenance folks groused about scum forming on every glass surface.

Brings a whole new meaning to ‘winter wonderland’, doesn’t it?

Yummy Coffee

Sunday

so, as I love our local Stumptown coffee, i wanted to tell you about a truly local coffee shop (local to my house) that does some great coffe. Blue Gardenia! been there a few times now, today we ventured down (yes we walked) to pick up a pound of their own roasted coffee. the barista on staff was wonderful. we used Stumptown as a guide and he recommended we pick up some of the Papau New Guinea as it would taste similar. Blue Gardenia also bakes it’s own pastries which by the way are amazing! Blue Gardenia also offers light munchies and wine in the evening and usually stays open late.
come on down to Mississippi blvd and try some Blue Gardenia.

they are also wonderfully nice!
