Fernando, The Village Green and Mike Coykendall at the Doug Fir

i love the doug fir lounge. why? because they give me, normal guy, free tickets to some shows. i love that. we’ve seen some good new bands as a result of these free shows. we’ve also seen some stinkers. oh well, it all works out.

last night we saw a great show of some bands we knew nothing about. Mike Coykendall is a Portlander who is known for his producing of some great bands. he’s now decided to get out on his own and puts together a great sound. he has one of those low gravelly voices aken to the lead singer of crash test dummies. the music is a range of slow ballads to rockin’ blues. and his band had some skills. i enjoyed it and when he returns, will probably try and catch a show.
Up next was my fave for the evening, The Village Green. i think the lead singer was 12 or maybe 13, but boy did they rock. the songs were short and well put together. from the beginning though, i did feel the lead singer was a tad flat, but that could have been the sound system or where we were sitting. all in all, they did a great show. one of the guitar players also played the keyboards and watching him bounce back and forth was enjoyable. they also smiled during the set. they were enjoying themselves, so i enjoyed myself. check out their site for some of their music.
last up for the evening was Fernando, a local fave. well, he came out rockin’, but then slowed it down. he and his band had skills, but it just wasn’t my type of music. he’s a great performer and his band is top notch, but the style of music was just to slow. oh well, now I know. you should check them out and make your own judgement. you may actually like it.

Fernando can also sound wildly different depending on the album. Old Man Hotel is fantastic, but I’ve had mixed opinions when I’ve heard other stuff.
