Minmae at the Doug Fir

Minmae

i love the Doug Fir. tonight was another night where we were exposed to some great new music for free. thank you Mrs. Puffy and once again, Happy Birthday.
the show started with John Larson playing a solo set. he was pretty cool, playing both the guitar and the drums with pre-recorded tracks bringing up the rear. the music was a bit like The Postal Service and Manitoba. towards the end of his set, he was joined by his band. i thought John Larson was mellow and soothing, but his band rocked! i enjoyed it and they played well together.
Minmae, Portland natives, came on stage next and put on a great show. the music was both mellow and melodic but also with some edge. they had some great rockin’ tunes, but my favorite was a mellow tune in middle which i with i knew the name of. the singer’s voice reminded me a little of Leonard Cohen when he sang the low notes. that was my favorite.
i enjoyed both bands. since it’s a school night, we opted not to stay for the final band. i hope we don’t regret that decision.
the Doug Fir rules!
