A movie to see, a farm to visit
Last night we went to Cinema 21 where we saw an amazing flick called “The Real Dirt On Farmer John.”
A story about a northern Illinois farmer named John Peterson, the movie traces his path from boyhood on his family’s 300-acre farm, to his college days where he discovered the 1960s, to his return to the farm, financial and legal hardships, and then his discovery and rebirth as a participant and a leader in organic farming and the community foods movement.
John Peterson is a fascinating, evolved man. Go see this movie. It’s at Cinema 21 thru Thursday.
After the movie, three representatives of Sauvie Island Organics hosted a Q-A in the theater. They described the opportunities, joys and challenges of organic farming in our region, and also talked about the upcoming growing season.
Sauvie Island Organics isn’t a U-Pick. It is a working farm, free of tilling and pesticide use, where members of the Portland community can join for $770 a year, work the land during growing season if they wish, and feed a family of four for several months.
In May come the greens, lettuce, radishes, spinach and turnips.
June, they got the beets- and the broccoli, and the cabbage, carrrots, cauliflower, chard, kale, peas, etc.
Cool people. Vist them at 20233 NW Sauvie Island Rd., and on the Web here.
