Marsees/Tully’s on 23rd closing
Today! Dang. That’s the second one of this chain that has closed in recent months. The other location downtown on 4th and Taylor closed in December. It’s too bad because it lessens the amount of choice we have for coffee and pastries. I have always loved Marsee’s eggle bagel sanwiches on weekend mornings. Fare thee well.
data through the air……like the days of our lives….

Used to live on the cliffside over the block and frequented this place.
Seemed to go downhill after Marsee Bakery considered an IPO, couldn’t get the funding, then sold out to Tully.
As to this IPO, I was sitting and eating at Marsee back in 1999, and overheard the CEO at the next table, talking to some investor types. This was a couple of years before sale to Tully. Only overheard snippets but being as though they couldn’t wow potential equity investors with their pitch.
So they limped along until they found a buyer. A buyer who, unfortunately, has had problems executing a strategy for Marsee/Tuly.
Tully didn’t manage this asset well. They couldn’t seem to tell if they wanted to remain a gourmet-bread and pastry-driven coffee shop, or a coffee shop with some pastries. As the months and years went by they seemed to focus on the latter, which cost them business.
NW 23rd has some residents who love gourmet bread but might not want oversugary pastries.
Also, the Charbucks that opened next door had to hurt as well.Tully’s Coffee is just not that good- not even as good as Charbucks which isn’t as good as Coffee People which, of course, doesn’t come close to World Cup.
Eh, good riddance. Aren’t there already about three or more coffee shops right there? Marsee lost my business when Tully’s took it over. Totally went downhill in a hurry. They used to be a great source of artisan breads with yummy sandwiches.
i actually liked what they offered and it was an alternative to starbucks. starbucks coffee makes me jitter. i especially enjoyed their eggle sandwiches without braving nw and hawthorne to hit noahs (which is now owned by starbucks right?)
oh well, back to taking my coffee to work in the morning.
Word from around the corner is that Three Lions is going in, and while I will still miss having an actual bakery that actually bakes bread, the three lions pastries are fairly good. And as far as the coffee goes, anythings an improvement over the competition.
