Happy Hour

I am no food writer. I know what I like, and I write about what I like. F’r example, I like Salvador Molly’s. Why? The foods can be spicy enough to take the roof off your food-hole. I love places like Toney Bento, because it’s cheap, it’s bento, sushi, soba and so much more that I love. Basically, I love food, which pretty much makes me a bad food writer. However, there’s one thing I’m particularly poorly qualified to write about, and that is Happy Hour. Why? Not because I’m a teetotaler, but because I legally cannot enter these places. Ergo, I’m an unreliable source for liquor writing.

The first of my links for you is an older article from the New York Times Travel section discusses various brewpubs around Portland. There’s an obligatory Widmer mention (and honestly, I’m getting sick of hearing about the goddamn Widmer brothers. If they send me a case of beer, I’ll talk about them all they want, but their story just bores me to tears after all these years), and a short list of breweries that the NYT thinks you should visit. I’m no judge (what with being underage and all), but they do write for an audience that travels.

My second link for you is to an excellent blog that does what I cannot (and my comrades seem to not have). The marvelous foodie Kalina Wilson has started a new blog catering to a very very specific sub-niche in the Portland Blog Network (I won’t say that hideous word). More specifically, she’s writing within the Portland Food Blog Network. Ready for the clencher? She’s blogging Happy Hours all over Portland at PDXHappy.

I’m not saying that this is a new idea (the Oregonian’s done it [warning, that page tries to print itself], Court’s rather overarchingly-named Portland Blog does it on a continual basis, and those are just the first two that careless searching reveals), but that devoting an entire blog to it seems like an excellent idea. I know that if I were to look at happy hour recommendations, I’d go first to the blog about happy hours.
