May Day
one day, when i was about 5 or 6, my best friend Matt and I walked down our street with flowers in hand and ran up to doors, left flowers, knocked and ran. this is what i was told May Day was all about. one year, it was raining so hard we got colds and had to miss school. another great memory of May day.
as I got older, i learned more and more about May day and its historical context. in the 20th century, May day symbolized a day for workers rights, a day for unions, a day for the communists.
these days, at least in the US, May day for many is just another day. it may symbolize spring? it may symbolize the start of a new month (go figure.) it may just be a Monday. outside of the US, May day still has power and strength. in between the news stories today of the immigration rallies in the US, there should be stories of other protests/rallies accross the globe where there are workers who are still discriminated against or taken advantage of. keep that in mind today. “Worker’s of the world unite – you have nothing to lose but your chains…”
also, pick some flowers, walk down the street, place them on a neighbor’s doorstep, knock once and run. you’ll make someone’s day.
