New Amtrak report: Portland’s Union Station was U.S.’ 21st busiest in 2005
According to a fact sheet just posted on the Amtrak website, Portland’s Union Station was the 21st busiest rail station on the Amtrak system in 2005.
Venerable Union Station handled 240,918 boardings and 238,450 of what Amtrak so genteely calls “Alightings.” Term, of course, means “getting off” (the train, that is).
The 479,368 total passengers handled placed Union Station 21st, between the train stations in Providence, R.I (20th) and Milwaukee, Wisc. (22nd).
You might wonder why the boardings and OK, alightings, aren’t the same number. I guess it could mean that some passengers that took the train out of Portland found other ways back- by plane, bus, or even by car via dropoffs by the folks the were visiting- say in Seattle. Have you done this?
Speaking of, Seattle’s King Street Station ranked 16th, with 604,888 total passengers handled. Not surprisingly, New York’s Penn Station was far and away #1, with 8,497,212 total passengers.

Yeah, I’m responsible (through my son) for some mismatched trips. He lives in Eugene, and there’s no Friday night train in that direction, so sometimes I meet his dad in Salem for the Friday night trip and then he takes the train home Sunday evening.
