an uptick in apartment fires?

has anyone noticed the uptick in apartment fires around the city? it seems that every morning on the news there is a new story of an apartment fire somewhere in the city. i would understand it we were heading into winter – with space heaters and such, but with summer, i’m confused. are people trying to bar-b-que inside?

    This one is a gimme.

    Social Darwinism.

Many of these fires are accidents caused by smoking, and research shows that smoking correlates with less education and lower incomes..which in turn correlates with renting as opposed to homeowning.

You don’t see Pearl condos burn, do ya?

Yes, I know there are high end rentals but those dwellings are likely to be more flame resistant, and also attract a more educated clientele.

And when you talk about the very cheap apartments,I got an additional reason: meth cooks.

Um – according to a news report this morning, yesterday’s fire started from a candle.

Which, I believe, is a behavior that transcends class issues, no?
