TriMet says ‘keep your nickels’

For now, anyway.

TriMet no longer plans on seeking a fare increase beginning in July to offset rising fuel prices - they’re able to get fuel at below-market prices, and their fuel costs aren’t too far beyond what’s been budgeted, apparently.

But they haven’t ruled out a fare increase for September - they’re keeping an eye on the pump, just as we all are.

I know various media outlets have looked at the question - are people using TriMet more as an alternative to driving their own vehicles - and came up with a ‘probably not’ answer that’s only slightly more scientific than spitting on your finger, then holding it up in the air to see which way the wind’s blowing.

What do you think? Do you think their conclusions are on the money?

And if I can make a suggestion about what to do with those extra nickels you’ve been saving in anticipation of a rate increase - why not drop it into some kid’s lemonade stand this summer?
