Blah-somming Lotus

I have been a vegan for over 12 years which means I always get excited when I have the opportunity to try out one of the many veggie restaurants in town. Well, today I got the chance to eat at the Blossoming Lotus, a cute little café in one corner of Yoga in the Pearl.

I ordered spring rolls and a “Monk Bowl” which is rice, beans and greens served with a spicy peanut sauce. When the food arrived it looked wonderful and there was plenty of it, but after taking a bite I noticed something was missing, namely the flavor. The food wasn’t bad it just had no taste at all. Even the spicy peanut sauce had no flavor. It tasted like soymilk mixed with cornstarch; well actually, even soymilk would have some kind flavor. This was the blandest food I’ve ever eaten.

I know you’re probably thinking; what did you expect, eating dinner in an uber-healthy, live food, vegetarian restaurant that’s sitting in a corner of Portland’s most pretentious yoga studio.

Well, I guess I was thinking they might have heard of spices like cayenne, tamari, paprika or even just salt and pepper for God’s sake.

I’m bummed out. I really wanted to like the place. It’s a cute spot with a nice atmosphere, but if I ever go back I’m bringing my own spice rack.

I don’t think it was too much to expect to have healthy, vegetarian food. If it wasn’t possible, I wouldn’t have been one for 7 years. Bland peanut sauce is miserable, indeed.

Oh that’s too bad! I remember that place from our (too brief) visit because I ordered some sort of spicy zucchini “pasta” dish (the zucchini was shaved into linguini-like curly strips) and thought it was really yummy.
