Free WiFi coming soon!

I’ve heard talks of this for quite some time and it looks like it’s finally going to happen. Portland has announced it’s plans to blanket the entire city with free wireless internet. Woo Hoo! This really excites me. If it is everything I hope it is I might save myself $50 dollars a month that I am currently dishing out to comcast.

Of course, it also might not quite be what you think.

It won’t be – I’d consider it a fill-in if you’re about town, but I wouldn’t replace your existing connection with it just yet.

They’re going to have to do a lot of work to get it right, and there will also be radio interference issues in the beginning – guaranteed!

I’d love to be an optimist and get in line already – but after dealing with Day 4 of wireless problems in a hotel where we’re *paying* for the service, I’ve gotten a first hand look at the complications involved in getting it right/seamless.

It is cool – but unfortunately from what I’ve heard it will be better than dial-up, but not as fast as cable or dsl…
