Scott Poole is Cool, I’m a Big Idiot

Being a member of FFRT on Live Wire over the last year has given me the wonderful opportunity to meet some of Portland’s coolest writers. To mention a few, Chelsea Cain, Tyler Hughs, Courtenay Hameister, Marc Acito, Stacy Bolt and poet Scott Poole.

I first heard Scott reading a couple of his poems about a year ago during a Live Wire show. His poetry is quirky, mesmerizing, takes you places you don’t expect, and damned hilarious; he had the audience and cast in stitches. The next day I was lucky enough to actually meet him at a function for OPB. Scott walked up to me and said, “Hey, I liked that sketch you guys did last night about revenge. That was really funny.”

Shocked that this great writer was talking to me I stared thinking, (Be cool man. Be cool. Don’t geek out. Quick say something witty.) Then I opened my mouth giggled nervously and said, “Yeah. Heh, heh.” Then I got a stupid look on my face, panicked and quickly walked away.

Last night I finally had the chance to redeem myself when Scott once again performed on Live Wire. Still feeling the sting of being a complete dork during our last encounter, I was determined this time to not make a fool of myself. This time I would walk right up to him and say, “Hi, I think your work is awesome and I’m not a total idiot.”

While standing around back stage mustering up my courage Scott walked up to me and said, “Hey, I read your blog post about the Live Wire Wordstock show.”

I of course thought, (Oh My God! He read something I wrote! Be cool man. Be cool. Don’t geek out. Quick say something witty.) Then I opened my mouth giggled nervously and said, “Uh… thanks.” Then I thought, (Uh… thanks. Uh… thanks? Jonpaul you dumb ass he didn’t say he liked it he just said he read it. Quick say something else.) But nothing came out.

After the show I was at least able to shake his hand and tell him I dig his writing. Hopefully in another year I’ll be able to get out two full sentences. For now I’ll just be thankful I met him.

If you’ve haven’t read any of Scott Poole’s work please go check out his website and buy a book, or his new CD, which is a thousand times cooler than reading this post.
