No, I don’t want to sell my car..
Today I ventured a little out of my comfort zone (east of 82nd) to go golfing with a friend. On our way to the course while stopped at a light a man in a car next to us rolled his window down and proceeded to ask me if I wanted to sell my car. Lets get something straight before I go any further.. I do not own a fancy car. I don’t have a big spoiler on it and it’s not a bumpin’ hoopty either.
Needless to say I was caught a little off guard by the proposal. At first I thought maybe it was someone I knew but I realized quickly that it wasn’t. My friends only comment was something like “These Gypsies drive me crazy, always trying to scam people..” I didn’t realize we had Gypsies in Portland and come to think of it I don’t even know what a Gypsy really is.. According to my friend it’s a person that is trying to make a buck at your expense.
Gypsie or not, I thought it was pretty stupid. If I wanted to sell my car there would be a freaking sign on it. Even if there was a sign on it I wouldn’t sell it to you on the corner of 102nd and Glisan while stopped at a light. I guess this incident just confirms my distaste for the outskirts of town..
We’re not all bad that far east, don’t judge all of the outskirts just because someone in front of Freddy’s was a weirdo. Don’t be a hater. Just think of it as a random Portland moment… (:
I’m not really hatin on the outer eastside.. There are plenty of weird people and strange incidents where I live as well. Maybe I will write about them someday too. :)
My mother always told me to beware when the circus was in town because it meant an increase in gypsies.
Is the circus in town? :-)
Of course my mother is also afraid of Bigfoot attacks when I go camping.

Gypsies are an ethnic group. The phrase “I got gypped” or “what a gyp” (as in “I got ripped off”) is a reference to them, as is “people trying to make a buck at your expense”.
Many people find it offensive. Kinda like saying “I got jewed”. It’s an insult based on an ethnic stereotype.
Well, what kind of car do you have?
Just about every car has some kind of cult following.
its just a 92 toyota corolla.. cant think of any cults that like my car..
That is a well-known scam. Hang on, let me google around…
…damn, couldn’t find anything quickly. Basically, they offer to buy your car for cash, right now. They get you to pull over in some parking lot somewhere, isolate you, and either offer you a counterfeit cashier’s check or money order in exchange for the title right now.
You end up with nothin’ and they get your car to part out or sell for some quick cash down the line. By the time you’ve deposited the check and it’s failed to clear, they’re long gone.
I’ve read about this happening in Portland before, but it was a while ago. But, of course, there are lots and lots of folks that still might fall for this, particularly older folks (not saying you’re older, just talking about typical victims of the scam).
who carries around their title with them just in case they come accross the ideal deal?
the circus is indeed in town. there are county fairs going on all over the place and the state fair is around the corner.
a group of gypsie kids stole my pen- grabbed it right out of my jacket’s inner pocket. so i share your concerns about the gypsie race!
however, i was “mugged” by these gypsies right under the shadow of the tower of pisa, which makes me think that they are more “city center” types.
being out beyond 82nd street- you must have been approached by a unknown race of car theives. dark elves i would guess.

Stole your pen!?
Holy shit! That must have been one Hell of a pen.

I just want to say they I never knew that people in portland were so ignorant.A guy liked your car whatever it was or maybe he needed a car yours looked like a piece of junk and thought he could get it cheap.Whatever the case you and your friend are raciest if you ask me.Also I would like to add the word Gypsy is a racist term its like callind a black person the n word and I think that if you were an intelligent person you would use that term the proper word is Roma so get it right and loose your ignorence
imreallisoryoufellikethhhat… uh..what?
