Free watermelons tomorrow

Tomorrow’s supposed to be the annual Hermiston watermelon giveaway in Pioneer Square. I remember reading that within the last couple of days in one of PDX’s papers - but can I find the information online? Uh, no….

So, until I can find details, here’s some vague generalities and/or patently wrong facts, pulled from my old and decrepit brain. I believe it starts at 11 am in Pioneer Square. They’ll be truckloads of Hermiston watermelons. There might be other activities (seed spitting, anyone?)

Anyone have specifics (or a less old and decrepit brain) here?

I can offer up something of substance, from a produce authority, no less: Pete Peterson’s guide to selecting a good melon, from a mid-July FOODday. So I’m not totally worthless here, right?

Update: I read it in the Mercury - and then blanked on the source ’cause I just don’t think of them when it comes to produce stories, I guess. B!X called it in the comments - it’s the Mayor’s Tailgate Party, it’ll run from noon to 1 pm, and they promise giveaways of other ‘eastern Oregon produce.’ Which begs the question - what else do they grow over in eastern Oregon, anyway…?

Damn I wished I worked downtown. It would be worth it just to head down there and make observations like “Hey, nice melons!” as women walked off with the produce…

I’ve heard they grow things called “Fishbones” over there. And they definitely aren’t Republicans.
