I just wanted to drop a quick shout out to anyone who is actually working today: thank you. This is the first time in three years that I haven’t had to work on Labor Day, and it feels really freakin’ nice, but so many people do, and often without acknowledgement of the fact that many of us are lucky enough to not only have the day off but to maybe even get paid not to work today. And to those of us who get service today, whether you go to the movies or eat at a restaurant or go to a yoga class or do any shopping, take a second (even if not directly to the person serving you) to give a little tip of the hat to those who are on the job on this holiday.

Labor Day always reminds me of one of the best bumper stickers I ever saw, right here in Portland : Unions: The Folks Who Brought You the Weekend.
