Reflections on My Own Labor

On this labor day, I look back at my past jobs, and there’s always one circumstance that stands out as a bit “off”. Most of I used to work for a local internet provider, which saw tremendous growth in the almost four years I was there. The growth pushed the company from 10 employees to nearly 80 when I left. As we outgrew the small building we were in, the owner didn’t just purchase more office space, instead he bought the large house that was two doors down from our office. The network guys wired it up, but that was the extent of the refurbishment.

Soon the entire tech. support department moved in, with two to three folks per bedroom and a mini cube farm set up in the living room. It made for interesting stories, as we sat helping folks figure out the internets, looking down at the brown/yellow shag carpeting still under our feet. Adding to the excitement was the fact that the house between our tech support building and the main office was a occupied by several drug dealers. One day someone tried to set fire to the house in some sort of pimp/ho dispute. Ah, the good old days.
