Adam Green/Jeffrey Lewis @ Doug Fir

Reason #254 why I love the Doug Fir lounge and their live music fare. Tonight’s show was Adam Green, with Jeffrey Lewis and his band opening. Jeffrey Lewis was amazing. A young kid with his brother on bass and a drummer, Jeffrey leads this great group with some catchy tunes like “No LSD Tonight” and “Don’t go to lunch with the record label.” I loved how every song had a point and the singing was clear as a bell. Jeffrey even did the “History of Communism in China” as a historical song - with visuals. Yep, he told us more tonight about China than a regular college student learns in 4 years. A great band.
Adam Green got to the stage a bit later and dove into a great set. Mind you, after 30 minutes, Adam had sang like 10-11 songs. Most of his songs are short and sweet and fun. Tonight, Adam was perfect. His singing is top notch, like a modern day crooner. The lyrics are whymsical and keep you guessing. Even thought Adam may have had a few to many beers, his singing did not faulter. His band also put on a perfect performance, supporting him 100% along the way.
Got a question - how do lead singers perform so perfectly when they are sometimes f’d up? Oh, and why do some bands appear as if they aren’t having much fun? Adam’s band seemed like it was just going through the motions while Adam put on the show. They were great, don’t get me wrong, yet I got the vibe that they were just up their doing a job, not performing.
I loved this show and when either band come back to town, I will go with bells on. You should too.
