Recruiting through Craigslist?

From alert reader David R:

It appears that Portland Public Schools is hiring for a “Senior Strategic Communications Officer.” I’d never heard about the old one leaving.

The fact that PPS is hiring is nothing to write home about.

However, I find it interesting to note that the opening was being advertised through Craigslist.

That’s right, everyone’s favorite place to find a used car, a nice couch, or a bike mechanic now offers you the chance at major placements in the State of Oregon’s largest education service district!

This just strikes me as another reason Portland is backwards on many occasions. Who’s with me? (Or who’s not?)

Sorry, NOT with you. You’d be surprised to hear how many people hear of job openings via Craigslist, and how many people *don’t* read the classifieds any more. It’s why The O’s shrinking, and newspapers around the country have rapidly diminishing classified sections.

In fact, I first saw information about my current job on Craigslist, I believe. Frankly, I give the district credit for giving it a whirl!

(Yes, the old one is leaving - I knew that, but then again, I would…)

They’re probably doing it to claim they’re meeting some sort of “diversity” goal or something.

Craigslist is too shady to use for anything substantial like employment. A garage sale, maybe. A career, no way.

I have had several interviews over the last couple years that have come though CL. Most of the jobs (at least in the tech area) are though recruiters and you see alot of the same job posted by different companies. I dont see it as a big risk if you do your research just like anything else on the internet.

I think it shows they are putting their jobs where everyone is looking? What is your problem with Craigslist?

We advertised a recent position at our company through Craigslist, and one or two of the “traditional” methods. Best resumes and the person that we hired came from Craigslist.

I think a lot of it depends on the type of position too. Using it for anything in communications, marketing or technology is a no-brainer - those are the people who used Craigslist before anyone else knew it existed. A banking exec or accountant…maybe not so much. Those types are more likely to agree with our uptight friend Oswego and think it’s all ’shady’

Hmm….I’ll have to inform my company that their hiring practices are ’shady’. Or not - after all, they pay a decent salary, have a great array of benefits, provide local jobs and support local businesses, dutifully pay their federal, state and local taxes, offer back pro bono services to the community, supported my recent charity fundraising efforts, promote work/life balance, reward for jobs well done, etc. etc. etc.

If that’s ’shady’ - well, I’ll take it with gratitude, especially as compared with some of the corporate behemoths I’ve worked for in the past.
