Will my beer get expensive?

Beervahna is going to take a hit in the near future. A huge fire up in Yakima burned a warehouse storing 4% of the nation’s hop supply. Hops are used in the production of every type of beer and Yakima is a nation’s leader in farming hops. We have hop farms in Oregon also, down by Mt. Angel if I remember correctly. It’s going to get crazy, all the breweries competing for the hops. Or will it? While this is a tragic story, there may not be any significant affect on beer prices for a majority of beers out there. I think this will only affect the small craft breweries the most. All I know is that I’m going to start stockpiling my Terminal Gravity, Lagunitas and Rogue, just in case. Any homebrewers out there know any more details of how this could shake down?

I urge homebrewers to patronize Freshops.com (philomath, OR) or check out some affiliated sellers on eBay. No doubt that fire is going to affect prices, but at least it will drive more business to our MANY Oregon hop farms.

this UPI report suggests that we shouldn’t see ny difference in the price of beer:

most of the craft brewers get their hops from hopunion which is a cooperative that is separate from the distributor who had the fire, also.

However, if halliburton gets involved the price will go up steeply :)
