Trees on the bus mall

It got me to thinking….If they are removing all the art, the tress have to be next don’t they? I know the city is fond of cutting down healthy mature trees (as in what they did in Chinatown recently,) so it won’t surprise me that these will meet the axe soon. I am not against the removal, I understand it is required for progress. I emailed Trimet to get a clarification, but have not recieved a reply.
Anyone know what is planned for this area with regards to trees? Everyone I talk to who visit the city always rave about how they love all the lush trees in downtown.

This is information I heard a year or two ago, so it might not be true or still valid: I understand that the current trees on the bus mall are (I think) plane trees, which are “full-shade” trees. Part of the update of the mall is to replace them with new trees that are less shady–there were lots of complaints that the mall is too dark.

So, I think, yes, the current trees are going, but they’re to be replaced.
