KGW is New Too (with a bonus O flub)
Yesterday KGW unveiled a new look for its website, following on the heels of KOIN and KATU with their recent updates. I considered blogging it before it happened but decided I’d wait until I’d used and experienced the site before passing judgement. Go check out the site, then come back for my thoughts.
Hit the link to read my comments on the site, or see why the Oregonian still needs a geography lesson.
- It seems to load slower than the old site. That’s likely due to the…
- Tons of video content. I’m sure some folks watch lots of news videos over the computer. It’s not my thing. I dinged KATU for thier excessive use of video, but KGW doesn’t seem to bother me as much because they have much more content offered in video and text, whereas KATU has a lot of video-only stuff.
- They have a new Neighborhood News section which breaks out stories by geographic area. It’s a good idea, although I wonder if St. Johns and Oregon City really belong in the same area.
- They still have several RSS feeds, which is awesome.
- They still are running viewer polls which are downright stupid. Asking for opinions is fine and dandy. But for some reason, KGW keeps running polls asking folks to make judgements based on facts they can’t possibly know. The current poll asks if Foxworth was demoted because of his race. Given that there hasn’t been any evidence presented in the case, how the hell could someone make that statement?
- They have a mobile version. I’m not sure if that’s new or not.
- I think I preferred the previous overabundance of blue to the current incarnation’s excessive use of gray, but that’s just me.
What do you guys think?
On another media note, looks like in this blog headline that the folks at the Oregonian still don’t know the difference between North and Northeast Portland. Sigh.

It’s the same template that a lot of Belo-owned stations use (see http://www.wwltv.com for comparison).
Like the other ones, it loads slowly, doesn’t always render properly in Firefox, and the video can be wonky at times. I wish TV-news websites could get a handle on video; YouTube proves that it can be done easily and elegantly.
I think they (The O) fixed that headline, ’cause I’m not seeing the issue…
You’re right Betsy, they updated it. It used to indicate the company was in “North Portland” despite the 158th Ave address.
KGW redesign sucks goat chestnuts.
I still like Katu’s. Call me prejudice, but I always root for the underdog.
