The best local supermarket you’ve never shopped at

And likely haven’t heard of, either.

I’m talking about Market of Choice.

They have four stores in Eugene. Got to know them well when I had a girlfriend in that area. But I am really really pleased they have expanded to our environs.

You’ll find them at 8502 SW Terwilliger Boulevard, near the corner of SW Taylor in Portland’s Burlingame neighborhood.

So why do I love Market of Choice?

Excellent selection, helpful deli and fresh goods departments, a reasonably complete inventory of vitamins and nutritionals- and quite a nice wine and cheese array.

What’s even better, a store of scalable size- not a labyrinth.

True, you’ll do better price wise at Trader Joe’s, and yes, Whole Foods has more of pretty much everything, but the people are friendly, they care about service, and you will be able to find what you want.

The only drawback to Market of Choice- the parking lot is at an off-angle to Terwilliger, and comes right after a sharp, somewhat obscured curve. That means you really have to execute an aggressive turn into and out of the parking lot.

But when I come home with my Market of Choice bag (s) I tend to forget about the itraffic impediments.

And also what’s cool- a second local Market of Choice is ETA’d by the end of this year in West Linn.

Have any of you shopped at Market of Choice? What do you think?

My wife and I had our first visit there this past weekend. I must say it’s a great place to shop, out of the way for us Montavilla folks, but had a good shopping experience none the less. They have three coupons in the Chinook book, all the more reason to check them out.

I shopped at their Eugene stores occasionally when I lived there. Now I drive right by the Terwilliger store once a week because of another commitment, so I stop in to get a few organic items and a weekly bottle of Genesis juice, a scrumptious locally made organic fruit juice I got addicted to in Eugene. I like the fact that they play classical music in the store, and carry lots of organic products, though the selection could be better in that area. I’d also like to see them carry more locally grown fruits and veggies, but then I have the farmer’s market for that. I wish there was a New Seasons near where I live, but failing that, MoC isn’t bad at all.

Also, Save-A-Lot is opening their first two stores in the area - at 68th & SE Foster in Portland, and at Linwood & King Rd in Milwaukie.

    Can’t wait!

Save-A-Lot? great, just what Portland needs, another mega-food chain. Sucko!

    yummy.. er.. uh.

i save my gross food shopping for trips to “grocery outlet”

or as we call it at my house “i can’t believe its not FOOD!”

seriously, grocery outlets rule. failed cross marketing (tobasco brand cheez its!)! failed flavors (roast chicken potato chips!) low-brow knockoffs (crispex becomes “crispy hexagons”).

its the only grocery store that makes me actually crack up in the aisles.
