Coming, the Sci-Fi Con is…*

Ohhhhhh my gord. You better look out kids, Miz Fishbones is about to get her geek on. You have been warned.

November 17-19 (well they only missed my birthday by a day so I’ll say it counts), courtesy of OSFCI, at the Waterfront Marriott is OryCon 28, an annual “Con” in all it’s Sci-Fi fanboy (and fangirl) glory. Before you ask, yes there will probably be people in Stormtrooper armor and Klingon costumes, but no I don’t know if they will throw down.

And yet THAT isn’t even the big news! This year Cory Doctorow is coming. Yes, it’s THAT Cory Doctorow. Of BoingBoing fame (and if you have no idea what the Boing is about I suggest you get there immediately, for it is delightful), he is not only an author I enjoy, but spent some time working for the EFF and writes things for a little magazine called Wired. I’m so excited! Hopefully some of my other favorites will be there too, like Dark Horse.

By and large, we gotta lotta nerds in Stumptown. Did you know the only publisher for Star Wars comics is Dark Horse? An inordinate amount of O’Reilly authors live here? (Those are those books your IT guy has on his desk wtih the animals on the cover.) Linux is named after Linus Torvalds who is working for the Open Source Development Lab in Beaverton? And that doesn’t even get into groups like the Cloud City Garrison, Free Geek, Personal Telco, and don’t forget we are the county that went looking for a Klingon translator for mental health patients.

Every single one of those things is a reason I love living here. Cory Doctorow is going to be HERE! I wonder if Matt Haughey (also living around here someplace) will be there too. If they are both in the same place at the same time, I think my head might straight up explode. I will try to be a reasonable human being, which works out for me sometimes but sometimes doesn’t. I hope I don’t end up being another blathering dumbass.

What am I gonna do for the next month? I guess I’ll keep geeking out over the Star Wars Exhibit at OMSI and hope that’s enough to keep me busy until the Con gets here. (Yes I have been. So far just the once. I will be back. At least once more. I didn’t get NEAR enough photos!)

* I just wanted to have two Yoda titles on the front page once time.

I’ll see you there, BLF! Cablenut and I will be in attendance, mostly Cablenut; it’s his big shindig every year, mine being the Black Sheep Gathering down in Eugene.
