A Portland Street Scene That Would Warm Your Heart
Late this morning, I was driving south on NW 14th Avenue, crossing Taylor, getting ready to turn on to the I-405 entrance.
I saw a well-dressed man, possibly in his mid 40s, walking with an older gent, quite possibly in his late 70s or even early 80s. The older chap was leaning on the younger chap for walking support.
Noting the obvious facial similarities, I sensed father and son.
But that’s not all.
Given the day and the hour, and the handsome suits both were wearing, I assumed that both gentlemen were on their way back from church services.
I then began to project the life paths of these two. I thought that perhaps, maybe not that long ago, the older man’s wife- the younger man’s Mom- passed from the scene, and it is the older fellow’s faith that keeps him strong.
And maybe his son, realizing this, knows how important it is for his father to feel that faith. To enable his Dad to feel the comfort and strength of faith, the son takes his Dad to church each Sunday morning.
You don’t have to be a believer to see the humanity in the scene I have just described.
