UPDATED: Beaverton the safest? HA!

It’s been all over the local blogosphere that Beaverton ranks highest in Oregon for “safe” city. Well this morning, they are being knocked off their pedestal. Police have cordoned off an area around NW Telshire Terrace where multiple bodies have been discovered in a house. Details are sketchy at this point. Stay tuned to local news for updates.

Hmmm. When was the last time multiple bodies were found in a house in Portland, the “unsafe” city.

UPDATE:
I have been corrected. This didn’t happen in Beaverton, but in unincorporated Washington County. I ask for forgiveness Beaverton for slandering you. I will be sure to get the facts straight next time.

Even the safest city in America can have a horrible crime, no city is immune to it. The study that ranked the cities was based on the actual crimes reported per capita, not on some persons random perception of what safe is. Crime can happen anywhere but this crime today doesnt take away from the fine job Beaverton Police do, they do a far better job of community policing than most cities and the recent awards and recognition received nationally and internationally attest to that. No city is 100% “safe”, all it takes is one violent idiot to put others in danger and take away that illusion of safety. No comparison between Beaverton and Portland as far as crime statistics go and size of city. Nothing wrong with Beaverton being proud of the results of the crime statistics and I dont consider us up on a pedestal for it so cant be knocked off. It takes the citizens of our cities working in tandem with the police to keep it as safe as possible. This is still a very safe city. It is sad and shocking to hear of violent crimes like this in our neighborhoods but this is the reality of our society, bad people will do bad things, everyone just needs to do their part in being a good citizen and educate yourself and your family on being observant and avoiding high risk behavior as much as possible.

    A few corrections:

    1) This is in unincorporated Washington County, not Beaverton.

    2) Reading between the lines, the cops are all but declaring this a drug deal gone bad.

    2) When people refer to Portland being unsafe, I think they’re generally referring to the odds of being killed by a police officer, not a “bad guy” in the traditional sense.

    Bob,
Point taken. And I was just railing against others for misrepresenting North Portland. My bad.

I especially like your second #2 point.

it always freaks me out that people think the suburbs are safe because of a low murder rate, even though the traffic fatalites and injuries out there far exceed the inner city murder/assault number.

i mean, i’ve lived in some really rough neighborhoods, and seen some people with gunshot wounds while i was walking the dog.

but man, the sheer violence that happens on our interstates and highways far far far exceeds that. when i’ve commuted by car.. that is when i really see violence on a grand scale.

Also - “safe” can be other than just murders. Look at the whole crime rate…

I don’t know the numbers. But I do know a lady who moved from SE Portland to Beaverton and in the year she has lived in Beaverton her car has been broken into 4 times in her driveway - and in the 10 years in SE Portland she had not one break in with the car on the street.

Anecdotal at best - but considering Beaverton is smaller than PDX it would be more fair to maybe compare neighborhoods…

    :)

    Punks live everywhere…

You are forgiven dieselboi! Maybe we should have a revised listed on Safest Unicorporated areas in the US?

Good points Bob and you are right George. It is amazing how most people are desensitized to the massive number of fatalities in car accidents. There were an estimated 6,420,000 cars involved in accidents in the US in 2005. There were about 2.9 million injury cases and 42,636 car accident deaths. An average of 115 persons die each day in motor vehicle crashes in the United States — one every 13 minutes. So much for safe, huh?
