Whole Foods Jammed- And It’s Not Only Because of Thxgiving

Sure I know it is Thanksgiving week, but I was surprised to see Whole Foods in the Pearl jammed up at 2:30 p.m.

During the week, Whole Foods is rarely crowded that early.

Not that even a small percentage of folks there were totin’ turkeys.

But what I saw was more indicative of Whole Foods itself than what week it is.

From people-watchng, it surely appeared that a good number of shoppers there took the whole (no pun intended) week off.

I have a theory about this. If you are in specific fields, you don’t have that flexibility. Clerical types, insurance brokers, financial services types, Realtors aren’t normally seen pacing the narrow aisles of Whole Foods that early.

My point is that by ambience and price, Whole Foods appeals more to intown cultural creatives who have more scheduling leeway to take all of Thanksgiving Week off. I mean, you wouldn’t see a similar scene at the Albertson’s or Safeway in Beaverton.

Looking at the crowd at WF I observed people who are either high enough in their companies to decide for themselves that they are taking the whole week off, or independent, self-employed types who can take the week off - and can afford to shop at Whole Foods.

Are you one of those people I saw?

Nope. I’m picking up my reserved turkey on Wednesday night from New Seasons, and praying that they still have roasting pans (since I don’t get paid until Wednesday).

Actually my co-worker said that she went to the WinCo in Beavertron over lunch and that the place was a mad house. I did say - yes but it’s WinCo - and she confirmed that it was beyond anything she’d ever seen.

No pun intended. Yeah, right. We know you, Russ. Is there a song to go with this one? How about this?

I’ve got the whole store in my hands…

Unless you work in a Hospital or as a policeman or fireman - you probably have the flexibility to take the whole week off.

But you may not decide to for various reasons. Maybe you don’t want to burn vacation, or maybe you can’t afford (or don’t want to) the unpaid leave.

The OP makes it sound like only rich people get to take Thanksgiving week off..

Maybe the rich are the only people who can take it off without it impacting anything else - but I know tons of normal people who take the week off simply because their kids are out of school…

Ummm, all those people working their butts off at New Seasons, Whole Foods and even WinCo sure don’t have that kind of flexibility…It’s not just people in emergency fields!
