Galilee Cafe: Bad News, Good News
Yesterday during the middle of the day I saw a brief news piece that there had been a fire at the Galilee Cafe in Vancouver. If that sounds like a familiar place, it might be because I blogged here about it a few weeks ago. Fortunately the building’s sprinkler system prevented the damage from becoming too extensive, and I know the owner has a good attitude so hopefully the restaurant will be reopened soon.
Last night it was announced that this was apparently motivated by a couple guys who didn’t like the fact this wasn’t a nice American institution like a McDonald’s. Based on racist graffiti found at the scene, two men were arrested and are being charged with arson, burglary, and malicious harassment. Hopefully they get a just punishment from the courts and have plenty of time behind bars to consider their actions.

do they put people in jail for those crimes in Washington? Wow, what a concept. Here in Portland, they would get a slap on the wrist with a ruler and sent on their way. You have to kill someone to go to jail…oh wait, I guess I’m wrong there also.
I hereby dub thee….dieselbojack.
Diesel, another kick ass statement!
I will eat here if the insurance kicks in and helps out. My friend lives in Camas and would be a great excuse to get up there.
I was appalled when I saw this on the news this morning. They showed video of the two men in court, and one of them looked over his shoulder, noticed the camera, and gave a little smile and a wave.
How about as punishment we spray paint epithets on your jumpsuit and set it on fire? That seems about fair.
(I am not a violent person, but I am even less compassionate toward a-holes who do stuff like this.)
I’m still waiting for them to reopen. What’s ironic is that I’m pretty sure the owners, like the owners of Jerusalem Cafe, are Christians. And I know the owner of Galilee is married to a Hispanic woman and just recently had a baby. I want so badly to have a big dinner here with PortlandFood.org people after they open. It’s my favorite places near my house and better than most of the Lebanese restaurants in Portland.
