Understandable thing about the brain cells.
The Metallica gig I saw at Roseland(then Starry Night) was the Ride the Lightning tour. Cliff was the coolest.

Wild Dogs?

Minor correction- it was the Master of Puppets tour when Cliff died. The Justice tour played Portland on my birthday a couple of years later.

Sorry, not all the brain cells survived.

Sadly, no. My first near-Metallica experience was the 'Justice' tour. They were opening for Ozzy, but due to the accident they were replaced by Blue Oyster Cult. (Not the time I fell down the stairs though. I've seen BOC about 8 times.)I did see the Black Album tour: they were still rocking the Coliseum when we left about 12:25 AM. (Last bus thing.)

I saw a lot of bands back in the day. Saw Frank Zappa the last three times through town. Pink Floyd at the Kingdome. My first concert was Tom Waits. (Oddly, that gives me street cred with today's youth.)Saw my first pair of glow-in-the dark panties at a ZZ Top show. I thought it was the whiskey and psychedelics, but my coherent buddy saw the same thing! Always getting the fine girls, those bearded ones.

Odds are, if you went to many shows in Portland in the late 70s to late 80s, we crossed paths.

Take a hit and pass it along...

I gotta give you some love on that one, Pirate King.
We may have worshipped together in the Church of Suds and Metal.
Were you at the Metallica gig back when Cliff was still alive?

When I was a young'un, instead of looking for the big pink building, which wasn't there yet, one would look for the 'Jesus- The Light of the World' sign. That's where Burnside was, and skid row was. It was seedy, but in a toothless, drunken way. The drugs have gotten hard core in the last thirty years...

I never went to the church, but I've had many enlightening experiences at the Roseland/Starry Night. (Uh wait, I saw Metal Church there, with WASP. Does that count?)I've seen people baptized in beer, and fallen without grace down the balcony stairs to the strains of Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla.

It seemed like a religious experience at the time...

If it's not on the marquee of the Roseland/Starry Night, it's around the missions near Burnside on the west side. I KNOW I've stumbled past it many times...

Is that the exposed awning of the old "whatever it was" now to be The Ace Hotel?
