Dancing People
Dieselboi once discussed the people that you see on a regular basis downtown - but I think that places where people dance are also great spots to see these unique but regular characters. And I spotted someone last weekend that I hadn’t seen in so long it made me remember some of the others.
There was the Vancouver Dancing Guy - flailed around to all the rock bands at the now defunct Arnada with a can a Busch Ice in is hands
Lemonade - once at a party he wore a yellow and white checked shirt, has bleached blonde hair, and was dancing wildly to Erasure- he just looked like a picnic so my friend dubbed him Lemonade! (We became friends later and told him this but still always called him Lemonade.)
There was Head-Band Guy in all his white suited glory and total 70s dance moves who used to frequent Polyesters - and now there is a new head-band guy complete with rat-tail and 80s dance moves at Lola’s Room.
And the best one - we thought she was gone - we hadn’t seen her in a quite a while - but last weekend we went to Duff’s Garage to check out Lisa and her Kin and she was back. Dancing Girl. We usually saw her at rockabilly shows at Conan’s (now Hawthorne Theater) although she also made an appearance or two at the old Blackbird and Ash Street for some garage shows. She stands in front of the stage - all night - even between sets still dancing to the house sound. Her feet don’t move much - just a right to left side step back and forth (and not actually in time to the music) but the top half of her body - jerking and flailing, arms and hands flying everywhere - and again - not really to the music, just moving ala Grateful Dead style dancing. Sometimes she’ll hold a drink - but I’ve never seen her drink it. It sloshes about - spilling liquid on the dance floor - and then between songs she sets it down on the floor so that she can clap.
I really gotta get that camera phone!
