Downtown trees being protected

Downtown trees being protected

With the construction on the bus mall, it is a given that some of the trees would be removed as a result of street widening and such. I remember seeing a statistic that 190 trees would be removed, but 150 would then be re-planted. I may be off by a few digits.

Well, along the entire mall now, most, like 90%, of the trees have these signs stating they are to be protected. Way to go Mall project.

Unless…..this is the work of those late night eco-terrorists. Hmmmm.

I don’t know about the signs, but basically on the mall anywhere there exists a double-row of trees (on the blocks with very wide sidewalks and fountains and no through-auto-lane), one of those rows of trees will have to be removed. In a few other places, selective removal will occur to create room for infrastructure, but also trees will be added where older infrastructure is removed, so this may be a wash.

The city has strong rules about tree replacement and they are based on trunk diameter. The total diameter removed by this project must be replaced by trees totalling the same trunk diameter elsewhere.

If we don’t cut down those trees, the eco-terrorists will have already won.
