A horrible lunch experience
I had a horrible experience over the weekend at a restaurant in Dundee. We were out entertaining friends with a tour of the wine country when we stopped in at the Dundee Bistro for lunch. The restaurant wasn’t that crowded and we were seated promptly. The waitress was great in taking our orders and providing us with bread. I ended up ordering the simplest item on the menu - the Painted Hills hamburger.
What I received was not what I ordered. I like my burgers medium rare. At some restaurants, I order it rare-medium rare to insure it is to my liking. Sometimes, they say they can’t do that and that’s fine. On Saturday, the waitress took my order and I got my burger - well done. For $13, I feel it should have been cooked properly, so I sent it back. The whole time, I didn’t feel I was being out of line and the waitress took my burger back without any issue.
When my new burger arrived, a whole 15 minutes later, the bun was burnt, the onions were burnt, the cheese was about 1/8″ thick and uncooked (even a little cold) and the burger was well done.
I felt this was someone in the kitchen getting pissed because I chose to send back my burger. I think that is very unprofessional. It ruined my lunch and I chose to not eat and we left. I did notify the waitress who offered to get me even another burger, but by that time, I was so angry and frustrated, it was a moot point.
I did speak with the manager who took the burger off the bill, but the damage was done.
I don’t know if this is meant to get you to not eat there or what. I may have landed on the wrong day. I just wanted to point out an experience where I felt the kitchen was taking out its frustration on me- akin to some MTV prank.

Wow. I’ve had really pleasant experiences there, that however does not sound pleasant anyway whatsoever.
It never ceases to amaze me how people sometimes so do not “get” their job. In all fields. You have a job to do, do it.
The cook missed the mark on temperature. Things happen, but med. rare to well done? The cook plated the food, did he not check? Did he think you would grin and bear it? Well you didn’t, you sent it back… what does he do? Sends you another well done burger? WTF? How did that equate solution? It is truly astounding.
Sorry you had a bum time.
On a related note,,,
Once at Balvo I had some sliced heirloom tomatoes that were tough to “cut” through with a fork, not impossible but tough… serious pressure had to be applied. Astonishing I thought, how did the person who cut those tomatoes (they clearly were not smooth cutting, Hattori Hanzo would have had difficulty cutting those tomatoes) think they would be tasteful and everything a tomato should be. Much less, plate them and send them out? Sigh, I’m happy 23hoyt is there now, much better.
I love the power of the internet! The power is coming back to the consumer with the ability to share experiences with the world. Bravo…
