Parade of the Avenue of the Wha?

If you thought the whole “Avenue of the Roses” thing was a bunch of crap, then you’ll definitely comment about the newest Rose Festival parade: the 82nd Avenue of the Roses Parade [linked to The O because I couldn’t find it on the Rose Festival site]

Commence alternative parade naming…. now! I’ll buy a drink for the best one as judged solely by me (to be announced with an update to this post at noon tomorrow) if you come to tomorrow night’s Metroblogging meetup.

Update: In my own totally unscientific and non-objective opinion, the winner is Martin. If Martin is at the meetup tonight, I’ll buy him a drink. His parade name was quite Imus-like.

That one’s easy. “Parade of the Meth Whores, and And Gak Heads on Stolen Bikes.” I have the joy of working over in that neighborhood. At least they stopped pooping by our garbage cans.

Can we call it the Ghetto Parade and be done with it?

It’s not an ‘official’ Rose Festival event – it’s on of their ‘community’ events.

    And my entry is:

Wow, I knew progressive, hip Portland disdained east Portland but just Wow. So far you all come across as elitist snobs who could not give a rats ass about your fellow Portlanders who live east of, oh let’s say 60th. As a person who grew up and lives in east county I feel the divide growing and it’s sad. Good on you compassionate cool Portlanders. Good on you.

    Kathryn,

I don’t think the comments are anti-east Portland, but more anti-82nd. Just like I think TV Hwy is pretty horrid, but that isn’t a commentary on the west-side. 82nd is just its own little microcosm and most of it is seen as negative.

    Hey Kathryn-

I live east of 60th. I speak from experience. I know my hood isn’t the “hot” one. It certainly isn’t cool, either. I’m not exactly quiet about it.

    b!x-

It was me. I didn’t even realize it until Randy Leonard told me that’s why he couldn’t come. But I will probably head over there after a cocktail or two.

It could, in all seriousness, be the Eurasian Rose Festival Parade. The Russians are on the farther east side and the Asians are closer to the west side — the “new Chinatown”. Just to add the “business district” theme, they could all ride in used cars.

I too don’t live that far from 82nd and have my fair share of crackheads and gang taggers wandering my street after 2am, I worked for 8 years out on 122nd and am regularly shopping, dining, etc. out East County way….and dieselboi summed it up – it’s not the outer eastside – it’s 82nd – that street just has issues. And as an eastsider – I feel I can call them out – kind of like picking on my own little brother.

I have lived around Montavilla area since 1961, and I have seen it go from a nice place to live to a Hooker infested Ghetton and now at least the Business Owners are trying to Clean “It” up. A Good Start. The Parade is a step forward, but I would have a Float with Red Lights and Sleezy, Scantally Dresses, Cigarette Smoking 82nd Avenue Tweekers, some Female Hookers, And some Montevilla Park Dope Dealers. Lets Clean Up 82nd Avenue!
