Not Dissin on SE 82nd
A while back there was a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of SE 82nd, and the surrounding neighborhoods, and I thought I would point out one of the highlights in the newly evolving “SE Chinatown neighborhood.”
Fubonn is a huge asian market that opened up recently by the PCC Cascade Campus in a new shopping complex.
They have an incredible selection of hard to find without going to Uwajimaya in Beaverton, ingredients, and great prices. I usually get items like bulk rice, wrappers, coconut milk, curry paste, dried mushrooms, garlic bean sauce, tea, etc. to stock up, and then pick up fresh produce, seafood, fish balls, and pickled vegetables like Kim Chee and pickled leeks. They sell the Kim Chee in bulk, and it sells out quickly. Their prices are way cheaper than New Seasons, or Whole Paycheck for the same items. You can also find unsual items that I really wouldn’t know what to do with, other than scare someone. I couldn’t quite figure out how to use a six-pack of duck heads (maybe recreate the restaurant scene from A Christmas Story), or how one would even begin to cook a really long intestiny thing that looked like some sort of animal rectum.
The store focuses more on Chinese, Malaysian, Korean influences. They have woks large enough to cook a small child in, and a really good and inexpensive selection of dishes, and cutlery. We picked up two knives for five bucks that my friend swears by.
The store is a really good place to go if you are on a budget, and also looking for alternatives to supplement a vegetarian/vegan diet.
I would suggest taking a field trip there with your kids, just for the packaging alone. It takes a while to really look at everything in the store, so give yourself some time. If you are in the need of any alter supplies, this is your go-to store.
The Malaysian restaurant in the complex is great, and the prices for lunch are reasonable and huge.
Fubonn is located at 2850 SE 82nd Ave., Suite 80., Portland

They had fresh pig uteruses yesterday. I almost got some just ’cause, well, they were there.
Don’t forget the pork bung. Who doesn’t want a pig ass in a womb stir fry now and then?
The largest amount of stuff is Chinese and Vietnamese. Right now they’ve got great pea greens. It’s wonderful for herbs.
Make sure you eat at Banh Cuon Tan Dinh and Malay Satay Hut next door.
The Malay Satay Hut is really good, and the people who own it are so nice. I have only had good experiences there.
The family and I only live 3 miles from the center and have been frequenting it since opening. The haircut place inside is excellent, and so is the bakery next to Fubon’s inside the mall area. Fubon is also a great place for inexpensive and fantastic produce.
