Impressed by Outreach of *Local* Company

So CostCo isn’t totally a local company - but they are NW and the store I shop at is local so hey - I can still be proud of them. We got a postcard today from the Quality Assurance department that read:

“CostCo’s records indicate that you purchased Kirkland Signature Premium Dog Food……..please stop using immediately….and return to your local CostCo Warehouse for a full refund……we are voluntarily recalling this item…..”

The CostCo brand wet dog food was just recently added to the lists of the contaminated foods. We’ve been keeping careful track of that for the sake of Begbie and Faith - our two crazy mixed breed pups - I even called the vet to double check after reading that more brands had been added to the list.

Sure the recall is still in the news - occasionally - but the newly added brands haven’t gotten the attention the first brands did - and since we still had to feed them - we were feeding them carefully with brands not on the lists. But we didn’t check everyday.

They didn’t have to send out that notice - they could rely on the media and general press releases - but it sure is good customer service. It’s the little things that make the difference.

So CostCo - I’m impressed.
And check the updated list to keep your pet safe.

I am puzzled by your arbitrary (but consistent!) incorrect capitalization of Costco.

But, yes, that is nice of them!

I’m a huge fan of Costco in general. They offer great merchandise at reasonable prices, they have a track record as a great employer and friend of their various communities, and they offer their members a boatload of cheap services that far too few people take advantage of…

For instance, if you’re a Costco member and take your drug prescriptions to any other pharmacy, you could be costing yourself a bit of money. For my family, generic prescriptions filled at Costco are almost always less expensive than our Rx copay elsewhere. I remember one occasion when Costco gave my wife a 3 month prescription for half the price we would have paid for a one month bottle elsewhere using our regular insurance.

It just hit me that they once sent us a similar letter… They had a batch of chocolates or truffles (I can’t remember which) that were discolored for some reason. Apparently a temperature thing in transit or something. Anyway, the chocolates were still perfectly safe to eat and they just wanted to let people know about it just in case they were worried. I love that proactive approach to customer service. Says a lot about their priorities.

Costco is awesome for a big company, I agree. So no complaints or anything from me.

But one nice thing I feel like I should add about about buying food from a local pet store is that they didn’t have any pet food recalled at all because all their food was local and/or organic.

And in addition to getting personal service and no food danger/recalls, I calculated that it only costs me $60 extra over a whole year to buy better, healthier food for our dogs. It’s a crazy good deal.

Again, not that I have anything against Costco. They’re cool, and I think they do a good job.

But I’ve been really happy with my local pet shop where they know me (and my dogs) by name and do the same as Costco to keep me informed about all the latest news.

Thanks for letting me post my two cents…

Heh - I don’t know why I want to spell Costco ‘CostCo’ - maybe it seemed like one of those ‘two words merged into one’… who knows!
