IKEA announces July 25 open date
Word has come down the new IKEA opening near PDX airport will in fact throw open its doors at 9am on July 25. This is being reported by the Portland Business Journal. Prepare for long lines of bargain happy shoppers clogging the off-ramp to the airport, Swedish meatballs and more. Thoughts on what you’ll be doing that day? Plans to hit up IKEA at all? Think it is part of an evil empire or not? Let us know in the comments!

I can’t wait to get my hyper-efficient plate of 15 meatballs, 60mL of brown gravy, 126g red potatoes, and 22mL of lingonberry jam. Oh happy day, indeed.
While I’m out of the phase of my life during which most furniture came from Ikea, it will be a pro to have it so close by so as to get larger items without a hassle. And, I won’t have to wait until I go to Seattle to stock up on napkins.
However, it was always an excuse to dash out of town for a little while. Now we have almost everything Seattle has.
As for people screaming about having “Big Box” in Portland — I think just get over it. This thing is under the freakin’ PDX approach and about as close to the edge of town as you can get. It’s not like they plopped it in the middle of town, like in Atlanta.
i picked up the MAX at the ikea the other day after dropping off my thrifty rental. that area is WEIRD. totally cool. you can walk around there cause its all odd empty lots and odd industrial spaces.
anyway, point being, the max ride out there is totally doable. bring your old crazy lady cart and stock up!
and we just decided to finish the 3 year master bedroom project….
coincidence? I think not!
stoked.
been cruising the online catalog already.
Sounds like they’re the Krispy Kreme of home furnishing stores. Lot’s of hype and brand loyalty, but what’s the big deal? Is it anything we haven’t already seen at Dania or Scan|Design (i.e. Euro-style particle board furniture at so-so prices)?
I agree with HIMSELF – I’m not much of a fan of their furniture – but partyware, dishes, lighting, cookware, linens and that sort of thing – I can’t wait!
It’s a good place to pick up inexpensive and fun kid stuff. And I don’t have to stress if my kid draws on the coffee table if I paid less than $10 for it.
We got our everyday drinking glasses 10+ years ago at the Ikea in Elizabeth, New Jersey for a really really REALLY reasonable price – 12 large tumblers, 12 half-sized tumblers.
They’ve held up great – but when I needed to replace a couple due to breakage, I managed to find the replacements at Kitchen Kaboodle. Sure, I’m glad to support a local store – but I still cringe at paying double the price we paid per glass, as I recall.
Plus – you can get meatballs!
