Whitefish salad spotted!

I’ve already confessed about my snobby NYC bagel ways, and alerted you all to a potential source of bagels for the rest of us bagel snobs here in PDX. But I’ve spared you my ongoing lament about the disappearance of the best complement to a toasted bagel: whitefish salad (preferably topped with thinly sliced tomatoes and cucumber.)

Sure, New Seasons has whitefish salad (The old Nature’s used to, but stopped at some point after the Wild Oats takeover.) But I don’t always think ahead to tote my own schmear before a bagel craving hits - and no counter operation selling toasted bagels has carried whitefish salad lately (Noah’s used to, but also stopped a while back.)

I figured these were all signs that I was in a lonely minority when it came to whitefish salad adoration here in PDX - so wasn’t surprised when the Kettleman’s counterwoman only looked at me with a puzzled ‘Wha…?’ face when I asked the first time I stopped by.

But there are more of us! More of us! When I stopped by yesterday on my lunch hour for a bag of day olds for the kids (only $2.99!), they had paper signs everywhere proclaiming “we now have whitefish salad!” So others must have been asking after it too…

And since I picked up a half-pound to go with my bagels, my kids (who now love it as well) and I are now happily chowing down on our breakfast bagels slathered with the stuff…!

I’ve never had the stuff… to my knowledge I’ve never even seen it… but you keep talking about it so I’m going to have to go try it…

At the Cedar Hills New Seasons (poss. the rest too), you can get your bagel prepared with cream cheese, lox, tomato, and/or whitefish salad if it’s in. We can toast them too if you’re so inclined. This particular store has an enormous deli compared with other NSMs, so we may be the only one with a bagel bar… honestly don’t know.

We like to carry real deli staples, like whitefish salad, smoked whole whitefish, jars of real deli pickles, pate, lox, etc whenever possible. The problem is, there are only a handful of customers who seek these items. My guess is that we carry these items because we should, not because they necessarily make us money.

    So please… buy up!

Also… even though we like to go local whenever possible, several of these deli staples are shipped overnight from delis in NYC, including our Carnegie Deli corned beef, the smoked whitefish, etc. There are just some things that you can’t replicate…

I have to ask the dumb question: What is whitefish salad?

    Thank you.

If your whitefish salad is spotted, you should probably throw it out.

Har de har har, Todd…! (poor word choice noted)

Whitefish salad: think tuna salad (and the many variations you can find), but with smoked flaked whitefish instead.

We’ll be making it at Kenny & Zuke’s, of course. Best whitefish salad ever: Russ & Daughters. I liked it a lot better than the stuff from Barney Greengrass.
