When I was in 8th grade, one of the highlights of the year was the field trip downtown for a walking tour of Portland. We did old town, the Shanghai tunnels, the waterfront and mostly around 1st and 2nd street. We learned about the coin toss that chose the name of our wonderful city and had dim sum at a Chinese restaurant. Then we ventured up into the city to SW Columbia and Broadway where we learned about the Ladd Carriage house. The Ladd Carriage house is a wonderful example of 19th century architecture and had actually been used to house horses and buggies back in the day. Its most recent function was that of offices.
Well, the owners of the land that the carriage house sit on wanted to redevelop it into a 35 story condo tower. Initially when the first plans came out, the carriage house was doomed. Yet, with the tenacity and hard work of the Friends of Ladd Carriage House, it was able to be saved.
Tomorrow, Saturday early morning, they will be moving the whole house from the corner of SW Columbia and Broadway up the Columbia to a vacant parking lot on the corner of 10th an Columbia. This is a huge endeavor as this house is 3 stories and over 100 years old. I believe festivities begin around 6:30am (corrected).
The cool thing is that when the underground parking garage is finished, the house will be moved back to its original location. Thank you Friends of the Ladd Carriage House for your hard work in saving a piece of Portland history.

Also, the RoseFriend apartment building next door was taken down on Thursday. The O has some good video of that.

It’s nice to see the effort being made to save the Ladd Carriage House. Proof that its possible to grow and still place a high value on, and preserve, places of historical significance. The Simon Benson house, now over at PSU, is another fine example.

You did the Shanghai Tunnels? I’ve always wanted to see them, but for some reason haven’t. I’ve done Seattle’s Underground Tour. If you’ve done that, how do our tunnels compare?

It’s be really interesting, I think, to get a Shanghai Tunnels tour post on here sometime; perhaps I’ll have to figure out who offers the tours…

I should clarify that. We learned about the Shanghai tunnels and went into the basement of Hobo’s I believe (remember, I was 11 or so.)

I did get to tour the former atomic shelter on Kelley Butte when it was 911. That was really cool.

Hi. You really don’t want to use the Portland Walking Tours. They will only take you to one room of the tunnels. You want to use: http://cgsmthood.com/shanghai/
This was the tour you took when you were younger.
