MetroFi is no longer the devil

I’ve ranted in the past on how bad MetroFi is, how bad the coverage is, and so on. In the interest of fairness, I thought before leaving I should divulge something:

Lately, MetroFi is working.

I still can’t get it in my house, despite having 2 bars on my Palm. But when I’ve been within a block of a node, with line of sight, I’ve been able to connect downtown, in NW Portland, and in SE Portland in nearly all of my recent attempts.

I still hate the fact that I can’t get a free connection in my home without buying some sort of boosting gear. But MetroFi seems to be pulling it together, and since I’ve been a huge nay-sayer, I needed to share that.

Of course, if you’re still experiencing craptastic service with MetroFi, we’re all ears!

You know there are quick, easy, cheap DIY plans online to make your own booster antenna. Pringles cans, asian deep-fryer wire strainers, etc etc all work well.

That said, my ass is still owned by Comcast.

I just got metrofi working inside, yippee! I’m on the 11th floor and have line of sight to the transmitter one block away. The laptop works on the balcony without any assistance. It didn’t work inside. Another problem is there is no way to route a cable from the balcony inside. I tried a couple of things and finally bit the bullet and paid for the Ruckus modem. The Ruckus gave me a lot of problems too, but it finally works in bridge mode. The last couple days, I got great connection ~ 600kbs.

TK: Feeling your pain. My wife would have my a$$ if I started mounting Pringles cans around our home. All hail Comcast, the evil overlord.

Tell the wife it’s either Pringles on the side of the house or it’s Pringles for dinner every night.

I was just DT on SW 11th and Taylor and was unable to connect from my MAC even thought it said I had several bars. I could not have been more pissed.

Here it was all plain and simple, but alas, no Metro-Fi connection.

    Curses from me…

I can see it out my window, but can’t connect to it. I wouldn’t even know what Metro-Fi looks like in my menu of avaliable services since it’s never once shown up. I see my wireless router, my neighbor’s router, someone else’s Apple airtunes thingamabob, etc… but I’ve never seen Metro-Fi
