QOD: Friends or boat culture?
The Waterfront Blues Festival is upon us and it appears the weather is going to be amazing. Alas though, I will not be attending. The festival does bring up a question though.
A week or so ago, when walking across the Hawthorne bridge, I noticed the first of the boats anchored out in the bay, securing their spots for the fest. Since then, about 50 other boats and yachts of all different sizes have tied up and anchored in the area. My question is- are all these people friends or is it just a boating thing. A lot of boats are tied up to each other to form a chain. It is like the fishing boat lines up by the Bonneville dam. Maybe there are boaters who read here and can explain. Also, do the owners leave the boats unattended this whole time? Sleep in them @ night? Are they travelling the world just seeing blues shows on the waterfronts?
(I wonder if the Mercury has a rogue group of scubadivers out cutting anchor lines to keep the waterways free… :)

I took my boat down there for 3 or 4 years- most people don’t know each other before the festival- but just help each other out and enjoy the company. I’d say its 50/50 on people who leave their boats and who stay the few days before the music starts… Definitely a good time!
